The long hours of practice and commitment after school paid off as seven individual runners, along with one alternate, qualified for the PIAA State Championships. The two-mile relay, consisting of Kerri McIntyre, Carey Shmihluk, Beth George and Erin Slocum finished first place with their best time ever, 9:21.23. Sophomore Jess Franks placed second in the 400 meters, breaking the school record, with a time of 56.8 seconds. Also, she tied the school record in the 200 meters, placing 5th at States. Kerri McIntyre, Erin Slocum and Beth George each placed in the top eight in the 800 meters. Jenae Strader placed 8th in the mile and 4th in the two mile. The mile relay which includes Kerri McIntyre, Beth George, Erin Slocum, and Jess Franks placed 4th. In addition, triple jumper Salina Hopkins competed and placed in the top 15 at the State meet.
After capturing the first place in the State Track meet at Shippensburg University, “It is the first time in North Penn history that girls track has ever won States. It just gives me a feeling of accomplishment”, remarked senior Carey Shmihluk.
In addition to being the Pennsylvania State Champs, the Girl’s Track Team won the Suburban One League Championship and District 1 AAA Championship. They successfully completed their dual meet season undefeated.
Many of the track members will be able to look back on their season and feel a sense of pride because they have accomplished something that has never been accomplished before by a girl’s track team. Senior Erin Slocum commented, “This season has most definitely been the most memorable one. We were able to accomplish our individual and team goals.”
The girl’s track team definitely earned all the recognition that they received this season. Winning the State Championship for the first time ever will not be forgotten.
Senior Jenae Strader simply stated, “Finally Mr. Crawford smiled this season and told us that we were the best.”
